The 2019 Portland Rose Festival came to its apex as the Grand Floral Parade marched down city streets

From the top of her crown to the tips of her gown, Mya Brazile is the very image of Rose City royalty.

The St. Mary's Academy senior was crowned queen of the 2019 Portland Rose Festival in front of a cheering crowd gathered at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, June 8.

"I would just like to be a role model to young girls everywhere," Brazile said after the ceremony. "To be able to take part in it and give back to my community… it's amazing."

She was joined by her smiling parents, Michelle and Montral Brazile. COURTESY PHOTO: DAVID ASHTON - Rose Festival Queen Mya Brazile celebrated with her family, including parents Michelle and Montral Brazile.

COURTESY PHOTO: DAVID ASHTON - Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler gave Mya, the queen of Rosaria, a gift after her coronation. The coronation was the culmination of a five-week selection process that deployed the 16-member court to the opening night of City Fair, the St. Johns Parade, local retirement communities, the Ronald McDonald house, Self Enhancement, Inc. and even a "princess exchange" event at the Pendleton Round-Up.

Each princess received a $3,500 scholarship, opportunities for on-the-job experience in their chosen field, as well as the keepsake official wardrobe and accessories. Mayor Ted Wheeler praised the "breadth of experience" of all those who received the prestigious honor.

Last year's Queen of Rosaria — Kiara Johnson of Parkrose High — offered her own advice to Brazile during the "bittersweet" surrendering of the tiara: "Enjoy it. It's only a year. Make it your own."

But there was no time to stop and smell the roses, as Queen Brazile was rushed to her place at the head of the Grand Floral Parade. She was joined by student marching bands, local dignitaries, prancing horses and intricately decorated motorized floats, each garnished with plenty of flowery buds.

Residents lined city streets on both sides of the river as the procession kicked off around 10 a.m. "It's the Portland area coming together to have a really glorious time," said Commissioner Amanda Fritz.
