Police Bureau shifts resources to focus on late-night races in North, Northeast Portland.

COURTESY PPB - A car is towed during a special enforcement mission targeting street racing in Portland. The Portland Police Bureau cast a net for unlawful vehicle races on Portland streets, and the results of the weekend mission include a number of criminal penalities.

Authorities announced six arrests, 19 traffic stops and four towed vehicles during the extra patrols on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. Police focused on North and Northeast portions of the city, where late-night races have become a persistent problem.

In a statement, Police Chief Danielle Outlaw said officers are seeking new solutions and charging strategies in coordination with the Multnomah County District Attorney's office.

"Street racing is illegal, dangerous and can have serious impacts on the safety of our roads," the chief said. "I hope (this mission) sends the clear message that this illegal behavior will not be tolerated in our city."

There have been 41 major crashes within city limits this year, and police have also recorded 34 deaths from crashes and collisions.

• Hilario Garcia, 18, of Hillsboro, on charges of felony elude and reckless driving
