Beaverton affordable housing project progresses
Beaverton has made progress toward the city's first project that will receive a share of the Metro regional housing bond approved last year.
The Mary Ann Apartments won approval from the Oregon Housing Stability Council as one of 11 projects in Oregon to get a federal tax credit for low-income housing. The credit is $1.2 million for the 54-unit project, planned at the northwest corner of Southwest Main Avenue and 2nd Street.
The state action for the Mary Ann includes $2.2 million from the national Housing Trust Fund, $1.8 million from the state tax credit for affordable housing, and $147,312 from Oregon's energy program for multifamily housing.
The City Council and the Metro Council, in separate actions in March, endorsed $3 million from Beaverton's $31 million share of the $653 million bond approved by Metro voters last year.
Washington County is contributing $1.2 million from federal funds earmarked for low-income housing.
The Planning Commission approved the project on June 26, and that decision became final July 22. No one filed an appeal.
Construction is scheduled to start next year, if all funding falls into place, and be completed in spring 2021. Walsh Construction of Portland is the contractor.
Project sponsor is REACH Community Development Corp. of Portland.
The $21.5 million project will consist of 25 one-bedroom, 26 two-bedroom and three three-bedroom apartments. It is named in honor of Mary Ann Spencer Watts, who according to the Beaverton Historical Society was Beaverton's first teacher, and whose classroom was in a cabin near the site. It is across from present-day Beaverton High School.
