Police: Homeowner with gun catches burglar with machete
A Portland homeowner with a gun detained a burglar with a machete in his garage until police arrived Monday night, authorities say.
The suspect, 50-year-old William James Kennedy, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on one count of second-degree burglary.
The homeowner, who fired two shots that did not hit Kennedy, was not immediately identfied.
According to police, at 9:53 p.m. on Aug. 5, East Precinct officers responded to the 8000 block of Southeast Francis Street on a report of a burglary in progress. Officers arrived at the location and discovered the homeowner holding the suspect at gunpoint. The suspect was taken into custody.
Officers learned that the homeowner found the suspect hiding in the garage holding a machete. The homeowner was armed with a gun and fired two shots. The suspect complied with the homeowner until police arrived.
Officers located evidence of gunfire at the scene. No one was injured as a result of the shooting.
