Murdered PSU basketball star Deante Strickland was also remembered at the Tuesday evening gathering

KOIN 6 NEWS - The scene inside the Augustana Lutheran Church during the vigil. In the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, faith and community leaders held a vigil for prayer and action in Northeast Portland on Tuesday night.

Local faith leaders held the Aug. 6 vigil at Augustana Lutheran Church to call for an end to gun violence and to overcome racism and hate in America.

Augustana regularly holds interfaith services and this was one of the largest, with more than 300 people in attendance.

"We suffer today in El Paso, in Dayton, in Portland, Chicago," Augustana Reverend Mark Knutson said.

Music and prayers echoed through the church. Names were read and a bell was tolled for each of the 32 victims who died in El Paso and Dayton.

The 33rd name read was Deante Strickland, a PSU basketball player who was shot to death last Friday in Portland.

Leaders made passionate pleas for change — calling on lawmakers to protect people.

"We must rid the world of those weapons of war," Knutson said.

"I'm a Rabbi — I have got thoughts and prayer," Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana said. "Politicians, you've got a job to do!"

Vigils are also bringing people together in Dayton and El Paso — after dozens were killed and more were injured in those two mass shootings over the weekend.
