Portland Police Bureau arrests Joseph Lee, 40, on Saturday, Aug. 17 on Interstate Avenue.

MCSO PHOTO - Joseph LeePortland Police have arrested a man for allegedly hurling items and furniture out of his third-floor apartment window.

Joseph Jerome Lee, 40, is charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of menacing and on prior warrants, police said.

Authorities say they responded to 6905 N. Interstate Ave. around 9:49 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, after receiving reports of thrown items causing damage to cars down below.

After arriving on scene, officers say Lee was "not initially cooperative" and continued to destroy and chuck items out his apartment window.

"Officers suspected that he might be in a mental health crisis," according to a news release. Specially trained officers were deployed, but they "were not able to calm him down, and there was information that he may be armed with a gun and knives."

Over the next five hours, neighbors were evacuated from the building and a SWAT team used "chemical agent" to subdue and arrest Lee.

No gun was found, but Lee was taken to a hospital by an ambulance before being booked in the downtown jail, where he remains at this time. No other injuries were reported.

Lee has five felony convictions and six misdemeanor convictions, according to court docs.
