Friends said they saw Stephen Coward disappear under the water while swimming near Sand Island on Monday.

A Hillsboro man who went missing Monday evening, Aug. 19, while swimming near Sand Island was found dead Friday morning, Aug. 23, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says.

Stephen Coward, 56, was last seen swimming near Sand Island at about 6:30 p.m. Monday. Coward was with friends, who called 9-1-1 after he appeared to struggle trying to swim back to shore, then disappeared under the water, the Sheriff's Office said.

Coward's body was recovered from the Columbia River near the Interstate 5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver, Washington, on Friday. The Sheriff's Office said marine deputies responded to reports of a body in the water at about 8 a.m. Friday. The remains were identified as Coward's.
