UPDATE: Man shot himself with his own gun during struggle with Port of Portland police officer

MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE - Deshawn SeamsterPolice have identified the man who shot himself with his own gun at Portland International Airport on Friday.

Deshawn Seamster, 31, faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon, assault of a public safety officer, interfering with a public safety officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass with a firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm.

The shooting happened during a struggle with a Port of Portland officer on the morning. The port owns and operates the airport. According to Port of Portland Police Chief Jason Wallis, the officer was not injured and did not shoot the suspect.

Seamster was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has a history of convictions including being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, delivery of cocaine, burglary, disorderly conduct.

According to Wallis, the incident happened around 5 a.m. on Sept. 27 near the baggage claim area near carousel 8. Wills said the suspect produced a handgun and fired it after being confronted by the officer. A witness told KOIN 6 News there was a scuffle at the carousel before the gunfire in the arrivals area.

KOIN 6 NEWS - Portland of Portland Police Chief Jason Wallis briefed reporters on the shooting incident.

Officials with the Port of Portland confirmed a man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
