Portland police have arrested a long-time resident after he allegedly squeezed off shots in the Montavilla neighborhood over the weekend.
Israel Joseph Elliott, 42, now faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon, being a felon in possession of a weapon, first-degree theft and four counts of reckless endangerment.
East Precinct officers responded to reports of shots fired near 92nd Avenue and Southeast Main Street around 8:16 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, according to a news release. A K9 officer and the police airplane also responded to the area.
Police alleged that Elliott left the scene but eventually returned, leading to his arrest. Officers conducted an "extensive search" and eventually found a gun stashed behind a rock.
Polie say the gun, which was seized as evidence, was registered as stolen. Police say there was no damage to property or any injuries. Officers "suspect the shots were fired into the air," according to the release.
Court records report that Elliott has two felony convictions on his record — for witness tampering and first-degree burglary — both in 1997.
Elliott remains in the downtown jail at this time.
