Pedestrian in ICU, driver arrested for DUII, police say
Portland's major crash team is investigating after a pedestrian was struck by an allegedly intoxicated driver on Interstate 84 on Tuesday night.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, a pedestrian's vehicle apparently broke down along the interstate near the Interstate 205 off ramp at about 10:38 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, leading the driver to walk away from the car on eastbound I-84, when they were struck by a passing vehicle.
The pedestrian is said to be in life-threatening condition, and continues to be treated in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, police said. Their name has not yet been released.
The driver — identified by police as 29-year-old Emmanuel Gonzalez-Coria of Vancouver, Washington — stayed at the scene and was later arrested on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and second-degree assault.
Gonzalez-Coria has since been released from the downtown jail, records report.
Police say this is the 53rd major crash in this city this year.
