Friends and family of 18-year-old Owen Klinger ask public for information after Oct. 6 disappearance.

Owen Klinger was reported missing Oct. 7 by his college roommates.

UPDATE: A candlelight prayer vigil is planned at the University of Portland campus Thursday evening, Oct. 10 as the search for Owen Klinger continues.

Family members of the missing 18-year-old UP student say his cell phone hasn't been used since he was last seen.

Owen Klinger was reported missing by his college roommates early Monday morning when he left Sunday evening and didn't return home to his dorm.

Police and university officials say Klinger, a UP freshman, was last seen leaving campus around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in a blue hooded sweatshirt, jeans, sneakers and a drawstring backpack. He hasn't been seen or heard from since then. Klinger is 6-foot-1 and about 165 pounds.

Mary Klinger said phone records show no activity from her son since Sunday evening. KOIN 6 News, the Portland Tribune's news partner, reported Klinger used an ATM reported Klinger used an ATM on campus to withdraw money, then headed out, but didn't tell his roommates exactly where he was going.

"We're trying to look at his social media stuff and phone activity that he was doing before he left," Mary Klinger noted.

'Want him to be safe'

Klinger, who has a younger sister in high school and an older brother in college, graduated Grant High School in 2019 and made the decision to live on campus at UP, where he shares a dorm room with two other roommates that he just met at the start of the school year.

"We were in close touch with him since he moved to campus," Mary Klinger said of her son. "And we heard nothing but positive things from him. His roommates are amazing young men who I give so much credit to for coming forward so soon."

She said her family has a cabin in the Columbia River Gorge near Carson, Wash. They were hoping maybe he'd gone there. "He loves it there, but he's not there," Mary Klinger said Oct. 9, the day after her son's disappearance was announced.

"We just want the message to be that Owen is loved and appreciated," his mother said. "We just love him and want him to be safe."
