Thousands of Portlanders sang Christmas carols, greeted a few unusual Santas and tried to stay warm Friday night, Nov. 29, in Pioneer Courthouse Square as Portland flipped the switch to light its annual Christmas tree.
The 35th annual tree lighting ceremony included a sing-along with Pink Martini's Thomas Lauderdale, performances by local musicians and a short speech by Mayor Ted Wheeler. Santa Claus had some help lighting the 14,000 LED holiday lights on the 75-foot Douglas fir donated for the event by Stimson Lumber Co.
Here's a slideshow of photos at the event taken by Tribune photographer Diego Diaz.
