COURTESY PHOTO - The Eastbank Esplanade near Salmon Street is shown here in a Google Maps screenshot from 2009. A man has been hospitalized with "severe injuries," police say, after a garbage truck backed over his legs while he was sleeping.

Central Precinct officers responded to the incident on the Eastbank Esplanade near Southeast Salmon Street around 4:04 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, according to a release.

When they arrived, officers and medical crews found the man and transported him by ambulance to a hospital.

Authorities say the man was asleep under a blue tarp on the walkway when a truck driver arrived and emptied a dumpster into the box intake chute.

The driver then backed up over the sleeping man while attempting to pull away.

"The driver knew the tarp was there but was unaware that anyone was under it," police say.

The investigation continues, police report, but no arrests or citations have been made so far. Police believe several witnesses left the scene, and ask anyone with information to come forward by calling 503-823-3333.
