Multnomah County Commission will fill the vacant Oregon House seat on Thursday, Jan. 16.

BRADLEY W. PARKS/OPB - Former state Rep. Jennifer Williamson in the Oregon House chambers.Multnomah County commissioners will select a replacement for state Rep. Jennifer Williamson on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Williamson, a Democrat representing House District 36, resigned in December to run for secretary of state. On Sunday, Jan. 12, Democratic precinct people choose five nominees to be submitted to the commission, which will make the appointment. Nominees include three people — Lisa Reynolds, Laurie Wimmer and Rob Fullmer — who are already running for Williamson's position. The other two are Chris Beck and Akasha Lawrence-Spence.

Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury has said the commission should not choose anyone running for the office. "I am hopeful that the Multnomah County Democrats will nominate an individual who is well qualified to represent the district, but will not use the appointment process as a springboard to run for election in 2020," Kafoury wrote to the party on Christmas Eve, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Williamson's replacement will serve the remainder of her term, which ends Dec. 31. That includes serving through the 35-day legislative session that begins Feb. 3.
