Events will pay tribute to King's life, legacy
The life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 20, which is a national holiday. Here are some of the major local events:

MLK Day at the University of Portland
The University of Portland is inaugurating an annual MLK Day event with local writer, activist, educator and spoken word artist Walidah Imarisha leading a discussion on the question, "Why aren't there more black people in Oregon?"
The event is titled MLK Day ON 2020: Engage. Reflect. Serve. It also will feature guest singer Julianne Johnson, a 1983 graduate and Grammy Award-nominated recording artist and songwriter.

35th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute
Annual free arts celebration dedicated to King's life, featuring speakers and performances by many local organizations and schools, "America's Got Talent" semifinalist Danell Daymon and international opera star Angela Brown. Presented by the nonprofit World Arts Foundation.
