The inmate was Justin Nathaniel Lugo, 35, of Hillsboro.

"The inmate advanced on one of our deputies, striking him on the right side of the face," read a statement from the Sheriff's Office. "The deputy defended himself, while another deputy successfully deployed a Taser. Additional deputies responded and were able to restrain the inmate."

The injured deputy was treated for his injuries and released from a local hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. No additional staff members were hurt.

Lugo faces a charge of assault of a public safety officer in addition to other felony charges, for which he was being held.

He has a tentative trial date set for April 1 related to charges, including first-degree sex abuse, third-degree sex abuse and first-degree invasion of personal privacy, court records show. Separate charges include fourth-degree assault, harassment and second-degree disorderly conduct.

In 2009, Lugo was convicted of third-degree rape and third-degree sodomy in Clackamas County, court records show. The victim was under the age of 16.

Lugo's appeal of his conviction was struck down by a Clackamas County circuit judge.
