Trecell Stinson was sleeping in front of the garage door of an apartment complex on Southeast 92nd Avenue, police say

A woman who fell asleep outside an apartment complex garage in Powellhurst-Gilbert was inadvertently run over by a resident and later died in the hospital, police say.

East Precinct officers responded to the 2700 block of Southeast 92nd Avenue around 6:25 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, according to a news release, after learning of the incident.

Police say the woman, who did not have a home, was injured but conscious and talking when they arrived. She was taken to a hospital with what were thought to be non-life-threatening injuries, but later died.

The involved driver said he had backed into the garage the night before, and was pulling forward to go to work the next morning when he "felt a bump."

"He stopped but did not see what he had struck. He continued [to] pull out and felt another bump," according to police. "That's when he realized that he had run over someone."

Police say the man immediately called 9-1-1.

The bureau's major crash team says it has completed its investigation and has not issued any charges or citations. The woman who died is identified as 47-year-old Trecell R. Stinson.

The crash team said this was the third fatality it investigated in 2020, but would not be counted by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics as it did not occur on a public road.
