Regional spelling bee canceled
The Pamplin Media Group Regional Spelling Bee, planned for this Saturday at the Hollywood Theatre, has been canceled in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Portland Tribune launched the Regional Spelling Bee in 2002 to give Portland-area students an opportunity to compete on a national level. Fourth through eighth grade students attending Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill and Clackamas county public, private, alternative and home school groups compete each year.
"This is a favorite event for us at the Tribune and Pamplin Media Group, and we're sorry to cancel it" said Dana Haynes, managing editor of the Tribune. "But the call for social distancing, and the cancelation of events statewide due to the COVID-19 outbreak, left us with no choice."
COVID-19 is the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
