The announcement represented a change from an earlier decision to keep libraries open, and county officials said it was an indication of how quickly things were moving with coronavirus and COVID-19.

Library officials said the county is doing what it can to slow the spread of the disease to avoid overwhelming health care facilities.

Borrowers are encouraged to not return books. All late fines will be waived.

Officials urged everyone to do their part to lower the odds of transmission, and to volunteer to help fill emerging needs.
