Clearly, Vanguard Brewing is not immune from the deleterious effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The brewery in Wilsonville closed its taproom in March due to restrictions to prevent the virus's spread, shuttered the location entirely for about a month and is currently struggling to get by solely on revenue from to-go and delivery orders.
"We're making the best of what we can with online sales, to-go sales. We're in the same boat as most other businesses," said Lin Anderson, who owns Vanguard with her husband Don.
Yet, despite their own struggles, the Andersons have made a concerted effort to help others in need. Vanguard recently started its Soup on Us initiative, where Lin cooks batches of soup and individuals can receive one quart or pint per day for free.
"Our intent is to help people currently affected by the pandemic and folks out of work that need a hand right now," Lin said. "It felt like the right thing to do."
Lin, an avid cook, tries to vary Vanguard's daily offerings. Some recent options have included beer cheese, chicken noodle, wild rice and vegetable, and sausage and tortellini soups.
Lin said helping others in need has lifted her spirits and hopes acts of kindness become contagious.
"We've had people who have taken advantage of the program who really seemed like they needed the hand and it's great to be able to help out in these times and have something that feels hopeful and positive," Lin said.
Vanguard is accepting donations to keep the program running. To donate, visit www.vanguardbrewing.com.
As for the business, Lin felt "overwhelmed" by the $5,500 grant Vanguard received from the Wilsonville government and said assistance from other governmental entities has also helped keep the business afloat. She's also appreciative of the business the brewery has received.
"We're so grateful to be part of Wilsonville. We live here, have a business here. It's been great," Lin said.
