A Hillsboro man died Sunday, Aug. 30, after being gored by a bull elk he was attempting to kill, the Oregon State Police said.
The incident was reported east of Tillamook, on private property near Trask River Road. Mark David, 66, was reportedly hunting with a bow on Saturday night, Aug. 29, when he shot and injured an elk. The animal escaped and eluded David, who was apparently unable to find it before dark and quit for the night.
David encountered the injured elk again at about 9:15 a.m. Sunday while searching for it with the property owner, the Oregon State Police said.
David attempted to shoot the elk again with his bow, but the elk charged him and struck him in the neck with its antlers, causing fatal injuries, according to police.
The elk was put down after it killed David, state police said. The meat has been donated to the Tillamook County Jail.
