COURTESY PHOTO: CCSO - A man was left with a punctured lung when he was stabbed in the chest on the bike path that runs along Interstate 205.An 18-year-old man was stabbed in the lung Sept. 23, while walking along a bike path along Interstate 205, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say Tommy Smith, 18, was on the path near the intersection with Highway 224 at about 3:40 p.m. when he asked another man for a cigarette. The question appeared to make the suspect — whom police have identified as Cain Newcomb — upset and an argument followed. Authorities said Newcomb stabbed Smith in the chest.

A unidentified bystander was able to stop Newcomb from leaving the scene and reportedly held him until deputies arrived, the sheriff's office said.

Smith suffered a punctured lung and officers at the scene began treating him before medics arrived and took him to a nerby hospital. Deputies had already applied a chest seal and utilized pressure bandaging directly to the wound, the sheriff's office said. Deputies wrapped Smith in a space blanket to help mitigate hypothermia and shock from the loss of blood.

Newcomb was arrested and booked into the Clackamas County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including assault and the unlawful use of a weapon.

According to the sheriff's office, Newcomb is well-known to authorities, with numerous prior arrests dating from 1993 on a variety of charges.
