Vincent Lee Joseph Melton is in jail on charges related to incident at Sunrise Market in Oak Grove

COURTESY PHOTO: CCSO - Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies arrive at Sunrise Market, the scene of an armed robbery, on Sunday, Oct. 25, after the suspect had fled. Vincent Lee Joseph Melton, 27, of Canby, is in jail on charges related to an armed robbery at Sunrise Market in Oak Grove.

Witnesses reported that a man entered the store on McLoughlin Boulevard at about 9:20 p.m. Oct. 25, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

He asked the clerk for a few items. Then, after the clerk retrieved the items, the suspect pulled out a pistol and demanded money.

But when other customers walked into the store and interrupted the scene, the suspect grabbed the items the clerk had gotten for him and ran out of the store without any money. He reportedly drove off in a white four-door sedan.

Deputies arrived at the market within minutes, the sheriff's office said in a news release, but the suspect already had fled.

That's when deputies interviewed witnesses and viewed video surveillance. A sheriff's office crime scene investigation technician processed the scene for additional evidence.

Patrol deputies worked the case throughout the night and learned where the suspect was likely staying. Then Monday, Oct. 26, sheriff's office detectives picked up the case.

Detectives contacted Melton at the Budget Inn, 19240 S.E. McLoughlin Blvd., Gladstone. They arrested him for a misdemeanor warrant of driving while suspended out of the city of Canby.

Melton was booked into the Clackamas County Jail, where he was charged additionally with robbery, theft and unlawful use of a weapon for the crimes that took place at Sunrise Market, according to the sheriff's office and arrest records. Bail was set at $261,500.

With a warrant in hand, detectives searched Melton's hotel room and seized evidence of the robbery, police said.

Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information on Vincent Melton and his activities on or around Sunday, Oct. 25, to contact the sheriff's office tip line by phone at 503-723-4949 or by using the online email form at Reference CCSO case No. 20-023003.
