Hardesty's endorsement of Wheeler's opponent comes the day after the City Council declined to decide on her proposed $18 million cut to the Portland Police Bureau budget.

PMG GRAPHIC - Political news and gossip.Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty endorsed challenger Sarah Iannarone for Portland mayor the day after the City Council declined to vote on her proposed $18 million cut to the Portland Police Bureau budget.

Hardesty had previously withdrawn her endorsement of incumbent Ted Wheeler because she disagrees with how the police have responded to the ongoing political protests. Iannarone has promised to assign the police bureau to Hardesty if she is elected mayor.

"This is a moment in history that requires strong and inclusive leadership, not more of the same status quo. If we are going to actually rethink community safety based on a public health model, we must be bold and visionary. Sarah Iannarone has a vision and a plan to do this that was developed and rooted in the community," Hardesty said in an Oct. 29 press release from the Iannarone campaign.

Earlier in the day, Wheeler's campaign announced he has been endorsed for reelection by former Portland mayor Sam Adams. Ironically, Adams also praised Hardesty in a statement released by the campaign.

"Ted complements the smart and fresh outlook of what will be many first-time city commissioners along with the great work of Commissioner Hardesty. He provides the city council a leader with a significant public service background, and hands-on experience with one of Oregon's best and toughest jobs: Portland Mayor," said Adams.

Later in the day, Wheeler's campaign announced former Commission Erik Sten had endorsed his reelection.

"Ted is facing more challenges than we have seen in living memory: the homelessness crisis, the pandemic and the economic downturn that came with it, while addressing the need for systemic change in our policing. To get through this difficult time Portland needs a steady, experienced hand, and someone who will fight to make things right. Ted Wheeler is the person to do that," Sten said in the Thursday afternoon release.
