Progressive icon U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has endorsed Sarah Iannorane for Portland mayor and Commissioner Chloe Eudaly for reelection in the Nov. 3 general election.
The endorsements were made in a posting on the medium.com website.
"In every corner of the country, strong progressives are running at the state and local level to represent our movement and lead the fight to transform this country," the Virginia Independent said in the posting. "These races are incredibly important — that's why I am endorsing progressive, down-ballot candidates across the country. If you can, I hope you'll cast your ballot for them when you vote."
In a Friday, Oct. 30, press release announcing the endorsement, Iannarone said, "Thank you, Senator Sanders. Bernie sees a progressive running to challenge the status quo, and he wants to help. I am proud to receive his endorsement. I'm excited to work on behalf of the 99% to hold big corporations accountable and to fight for health care for all Portlanders and everyone across the country."
All other Oregon candidates endorsed by Sanders are Democrats. They include: Fourth District Oregon U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio; Ashton Simpson for State Representative, HD-45;
Wlnsvey Campos for State Representative, HD-28; Ricky Ruiz for State Representative, HD-50; Michael Dembrow for State Senate, SD-23; and Lew Frederick for State Senate, SD-22.
