The director of the Office of Government Relations will resign after four years representing the city.

PMG GRAPHIC - Political news and gossip. The chief lobbyist for the city of Portland is leaving before the beginning of the next sessions of the Oregon Legislature and U.S. Congress.

Elizabeth Edwards, director of the Portland Office of Government Relations, will resign on Jan. 6, 2012. In a recent email to other members of the Capitol Club, which includes most of the other professional lobbyists in Salem, Edwards said she does not have another job lined up.

"Because I know folks will be curious about what's next for me — I'm taking a sabbatical to rest and recover and then figure out what is next," said Edwards, who has been with the city for seven years, the last four as the office's director.

Asked to comment, Mayor Ted Wheeler said, "Director Edwards is a treasured member of the city's leadership team, and it has been an honor to work with her. She has ably led the city through a number of challenges over the years, and has been extraordinary helping us navigate through the ongoing uncertainty and complexity of the pandemic. We are deeply indebted to her and wish her well."

The position will be posted by the city and Edwards encourages the other Capitol Club members to refer applicants to it. The replacement will be appointed by Wheeler. His communications director, Jim Middaugh, said the mayor wants to have a deep pool of qualified candidates to draw from.
