Campaign and lawsuit against Wheeler may complicate City Hall lobbying efforts.

PMG GRAPHIC - Political news and gosip.A little more than two months after losing the 2020 Portland mayor's race to incumbent Ted Wheeler, Sarah Iannarone has been hired to lead the Street Trust.

Formerly known as the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, the nonprofit organization advocates for alternatives to personal motor vehicles. Iannarone repeatedly pointed out that she bicycled to most engagements during the campaign.

In the Jan. 9 announcement, the organization said the Portland region is facing a series of transportation challenges, including the highest number of traffic fatalities in the city in 24 years. It may be awkward for Iannarone to lobby Wheeler for more transportation safety funding. Not only did she repeatedly criticize his leadership during the race, she also accused him of breaking the law and sued him for violating campaign finance limits after they were approved by the Oregon Supreme Court.

She has also created a political action committee called Our Portland, whose stated purpose is "To advance the policies proposed during Sarah Iannarone's campaign for Portland Mayor and other community initiatives."
