Both West Burnside and eastbound I-84 are closed Wednesday morning as many residents lose power.

KOIN 6 NEWS - West Burnside in Portland is closed at the pedestrian bridge by a landslide.Landslides closed major roads in the Portland region as thousands of residents were without power because of a major overnight storm.

In Portland, a "significant landslide" closed West Burnside near Southwest Barnes Road, Portland Fire & Rescue tweeted late Tuesday night.

Officials said the landslide at the Pedestrian Bridge east of Barnes brought trees and power lines down in the area and knocked power out from Northwest 21st Avenue to the west.

The closure is expected to last for many hours.

East of Portland, eastbound Interstate 84 is closed at the Troutdale exit after a landslide spilled onto the freeway near Dodson earlier Wednesday morning.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office first tweeted about the landslide shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 13. Half an hour later, MCSO said the landslide was still active.

First responders from the Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon State Police and MCSO are on scene searching for anyone who may have been caught in the debris.

MCSO says they do not know how wide the landslide is, but deputies estimate it to be several feet deep in some areas. ODOT is bringing in machinery to clear the roadways, which is expected to take many hours.

A slide has also restricted U.S. 30 to one lane in both directions at Saltzman Road. Travelers should be alert for maintenance workers in the area trying to get the other lanes open again. Travelers on U.S. 30 should also watch for water on the road as the heavy rains have created conditions for slides.

Meanwhile, high wind and heavy rain led to massive power outages in the region. Portland General Electric reported about 94,000 customers are without power early Wednesday, with 60,000 of those in the tri-county area. Pacific Power is currently reporting around 15,000 customers are affected, with about 5,000 in the tri-county area. Over in Clark County, 10,000 customers are reportedly without power.

Crews have been working through the night to restore power and will continue throughout the day.
