Oregon Democrats call for impeachment trial
Democrats in Oregon's congressional delegation are calling on the U.S Senate to immediately hold a trial to throw President Donald Trump out of office after he was impeached in U.S. House for the second time on Wednesday.
Republican U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will not reconvene the U.S. Senate until Jan. 19, which is one day before Trump will leave office after Joe Biden is scheduled to be sworn in as the next president.
Nevertheless, in statements released after the Jan. 13 House impeachment vote, the Democratic majority of Oregon's congressional delegation called on McConnell to immediately or quickly reconvene the U.S. Senate on the impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection. They included Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Sen. Jeff Merkley and Sen. Ron Wyden.
The House vote to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 siege of the Capitol Building was 232 yes to 197 no. Ten Republicans joined all Democrats to impeach Trump and put him on trial in the Senate.
Here are portions of the statements of Oregon elected officials released by their offices:
Blumenauer: "The impeachment resolution now heads to the United States Senate" where Blumenauer is urging a swift trial
Bonamici: "We are now forced to reckon with the grave reality that the President of the United States directly incited an attack on our government and country, and he must be held accountable. He is wholly unfit for office and must never be able to serve in government again. I commend my colleagues, Representatives Cicilline, Lieu, and Raskin, for drafting this resolution of impeachment. For the sake of democracy, the Senate must now follow our lead, rise to the occasion, and swiftly convict the President of the high crimes and misdemeanors he has committed."
Merkley: "It is now the responsibility of the U.S. Senate to convene, to immediately hold an impeachment trial. We face arguably the most serious threat to the integrity of our national government since the Civil War. This is no time for partisan calculations and personal ambition to drive decisions. Everyone who believes in our Constitution and the rule of law should come together to defend America. Our nation desperately needs full accountability in order to seek justice and heal from last week's disturbing violence."
Wyden: "Donald Trump is a clear danger to our country and our democracy. Mitch McConnell must bring the articles of impeachment to the Senate floor as soon as possible for a final verdict. There cannot be unity without accountability."
