Health officials say 7,500 people a day can be vaccinated against COVID-19 when it is fully staffed.

KOIN 6 NEWS - A mass vaccination site opened at the Oregon Convention Center on Wednesday.A new mass COVID-19 vaccination site opened at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland on Wednesday, Jan. 20, with the combined forces of Kaiser Permanente, OHSU, Providence and Legacy Health.

Officials with each health care system held joint press conference to provide more details.

The mass vaccination center will ramp up to full capacity sometime next week when Providence, Legacy Health and OHSU arrive. But Kaiser Permanente began administering vaccines on Wednesday.

The vaccinations are free.

When all four systems are in place, authorities said the plans are to be able to vaccinate up to 7,500 people a day, depending on the supply of the vaccine. Each person vaccinated will be scheduled for their second dose.

Both the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines will be administered, authorities said.

Physicians, nurses, volunteers and the Oregon National Guard will be among the hundreds of people at the mass vaccination site. This is one of several mass vaccination clinics in the state, including drive-through clinics and one at the Oregon State Fairgrounds.

Officials said a centralized vaccination site for the Portland metro will make it easier to get information to the public about where and when to get vaccinations.

The site opened the day after the Oregon Health Authority announced that COVID-19 has claimed five more lives, raising the state's death toll to 1,808.

State health officials also reported 637 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, bringing the state total to 134,468.
