Clackamas County commissioner's apology is 'not enough,' school board says in new call for resignation.

FILE - Commissioner Mark ShullThe Gresham-Barlow School Board delivered a now-familiar message to Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull: quit your job.

"While we acknowledge Mark Shull has publicly apologized for his comments, an apology is not enough," the seven-member board said in a Jan. 29 statement. "As leaders in education representing these same constituents, we join with Clackamas County leaders in calling on Mark Shull to resign as County Commissioner immediately."

More than 150 elected leaders and organizations in Oregon have joined the chorus calling for Shull's resignation, though the Florida-born retiree has indicated he plans to hold on to his $104,000-a-year salaried post, at least in the short term.

Activists have vowed to yank Shull from his position of power, but Oregon law prohibits any politician from being recalled before they serve at least six months in office.

Shull's social media posts first came to light on Jan. 11, shortly before he was set to be ceremonially sworn in. Among other things, Shull wrote in 2019 that Muslim immigrants to America were "savages" and "invaders" who should face "extermination outside the lands of Islam."

The Gresham-Barlow board, which includes former lawmaker Carla Piluso, described Shull's language as "contemptible comments on social media that were harmful to our Muslim, immigrant, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized communities."

"To ensure that we can create this world, we will do our part to call out bigotry and harm to children and families in our district," the board continued. "We are committed to confronting white supremacy, nationalism and racial violence (be it emotional, mental, or physical) at every level within our district."

Gresham-Barlow serves nearly 12,000 students, including some in Clackamas County communities in the vicinity of Southeast 242nd Avenue and Sunnyside Road.
