Drivers headed toward the Gorge on Interstate 84 are the target of a new ad campaign by the Democratic National Committee.

SUBMITTED PHOTO - The Democratic National Committee has purchased a new billboard with a blatant message for drivers on Interstate 84 passing through East Multnomah County. The nation's top Democrats have an all-caps message for Oregon motorists: Help — and more importantly, cash — is on the way.

The Democratic National Committee is spreading that message with a new posting on a billboard near Exit 16 in Wood Village alongside Interstate 84.

"HELP IS HERE. $1,400 CHECKS. $$$ TO REOPEN SCHOOLS. $$$ FOR VACCINES," the billboard proclaims.

Representatives for the Democratic Party of Oregon say the ad was developed as a gesture of gratitude for President Joe Biden, Oregon Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and the Oregon voters who keep all three in the halls of power.

"Oregonians turned out in record numbers last fall to elect Democrats who would soon deliver much-needed relief to help our state and our country recover from the COVID-19 pandemic," said DPO Chair Carla "K.C." Hanson. "We're going to make sure that Oregonians know that Democrats delivered on our promises, and not a single Republican — including Cliff Bentz — voted to help put checks in pockets, get more shots in arms and give schools the resources they need."

The DPO says Biden's American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill signed into law by Biden last month, includes $2.758 billion for Oregon state government fiscal relief, as well as $1.5 billion for Oregon towns, $1.1 billion for K-12 schools — not to mention direct payments of $1,400 each for 2.7 million Oregonians rocked by the novel coronavirus' economic impact.

Additional relief in the law includes the $1,600 per child tax credit and a nearly $1,000 Earned Income Tax Credit, as well as lower marketplace health insurance premiums, according to a news release.

The billboard will stand watch along I-84 for three weeks.

"Folks in Portland and senators traveling home won't be able to miss this message: help is here because of President Biden, Senators Merkley and Wyden, and Oregon Democrats," said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. "Democrats aren't slowing down anytime soon. Thank you, Senators Merkley and Wyden!"

Tim McCann, spokesman for the Oregon Democrats, said he did not know the cost of the advertising as it was paid for and designed by the DNC.
