Even a fully-loaded version of the compact crossover costs less than the starting price of some competitors.

There's an interesting slice of the SUV market devoted to the two-row, five-passenger vehicle. Where family buyers are looking for three-row, seven-passenger carrying capacity, younger and older buyers often prefer the roomy characteristics that come with just two rows of seats. Entries in this category tend to be a little more luxurious, with examples including the Nissan Murano, Chevrolet Blazer, Toyota Venza, Honda Passport, and Ford Edge.

If you're looking for that two-row interior space, you can save some money and still get a great vehicle by cross-shopping the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. The Eclipse Cross gives you that fastback coupe-style SUV design in an up-to-date package with a stylish interior and good performance, together with a more affordable price point.

One interesting feature of the Eclipse Cross is its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Its 152 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque may not look impressive on paper, but Mitsubishi's continuously variable transmission puts all that power to good use. The transmission is programmed to simulate an eight-speed automatic transmission, so the engine is always in its power band. The smaller displacement enables the Eclipse Cross to return 25 MPG in city driving, and 26 MPG on the highway. Finally, you can also choose Mitsubishi's all-wheel-drive system, called Super All-Wheel-Control, so the Eclipse Cross will go anywhere in Portland's winter weather.

Inside, the Eclipse Cross is fully modern, with an impressive suite of tech and safety features. The most basic trims include a seven-inch display screen, but an eight-inch screen with navigation is available. The screen is mounted high up on the dash for easy access without dropping your vision away from the road ahead. The display also shows you the available multi-view camera system for excellent visibility.

Interior design includes cloth, synthetic suede, or real leather surfaces, and both the front and outboard rear seats can be heated.

The safety and convenience features are there, too. From adaptive cruise control to a head-up display, every modern feature is available. Blind spot and rear cross traffic warnings, forward collision mitigation, lane departure, and automatic high beams are all available in the higher trim levels.

The Eclipse Cross is worth your attention based on its features, but you'll also save some money compared to other brands. The most basic Eclipse Cross starts at $23,395 with front wheel drive and a cloth interior. Adding the Super All-Wheel-Control is a good idea for Portland drivers, and that model starts at $24,995. If you want the top trim with many of the goodies, that's $28,995. The SEL Touring option package delivers the head-up display, heated rear seats, panoramic sunroof, forward collision mitigation, and adaptive cruise control for an additional $2,100. That means you can trim out the Eclipse Cross for about the starting price of some other brands.

The bottom line on the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is that if you think outside the major brand box, you can find a great value on a new SUV with the features you want. That's an attractive way to greet this year's activity-filled summer.
