Portland, Gresham police: 2 dead, 2 wounded in shootings
Two people were wounded and another two killed as Portland Police Bureau and Gresham Police Department officers responded to four shootings across the city on Wednesday, May 5.
Portland police have identified the woman killed near Cathedral Park as Breauna White, 30, a TriMet driver.
"Our hearts go out to Bre and her family," TriMet said in a Thursday statement. "She was a valued bus operator and will be missed by her co-workers and the entire TriMet team."
The four separate shootings began just after midnight and continued into the afternoon hours, authorities say. There is no indication the incidents are linked, PPB spokesman Greg Pashley told Pamplin Media.
Police say the first incident happened after midnight, around 12:52 a.m., in the Centennial neighborhood near the intersection of Southeast 162nd Avenue and Taylor Street. A person in a car was shot by someone in a different vehicle, which sped away before police arrived. The assailant fired multiple shots.
Officers contacted a victim just blocks away, and "attempted to get the victim medical attention for an apparent gunshot wound," according to a news release, but were apparently rebuffed. The victim eventually arrived at a hospital in a private car.
In the second incident, police arrived in the Cully neighborhood at Northeast 82nd Avenue and Alberta Street around 5:28 a.m. Police say the suspect had already fled. The victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
The third shooting was reported around 10:41 a.m in the Cathedral Park neighborhood at North Willamette Boulevard and Charleston Avenue. Police responded after receiving reports of multiple shots fired, and found a dead person apparently shot and killed inside an apartment, later identified as White. No suspect was found at the scene.
KOIN 6 News interviewed a neighborhor who said they saw a man wearing a hat rushing away from the scene, who may have attempted to board a nearby TriMet bus that was later taped off with crime scene tape.

Bank robbery suspect arrested
Back in Portland, around 12:45 p.m. May 5, police responded to reports of a man who claimed to have a knife and demanded money from the teller at a bank in the 4500 block of North Interstate Avenue.
After receiving cash, police say the man fled, but was found about two and a half miles away in the 4000 block of North Winchell Avenue.
Benjamin Patrick Murphy, 26, is now being held at the downtown jail on a U.S. Marshal hold. Murphy was arrested in 2019 after he allegedly smashed a window at a Portland REI just after midnight on Feb. 21, absconding with five jackets worth more than $4,500, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Murphy described himself as an unemployed artist who stole the jackets to pay his rent, court docs say. A security guard told police Murphy had shoplifted from the store during business hours a month prior.
He was later convicted of second-degree burglary.
