A 71-year-old hiker who went missing near the Horsetail Falls trail system over the weekend was found Monday, May 10, conscious and breathing.

Rescue crews reported around 9 a.m. that Joseph Edward Dean had been discovered near the Rock of Ages Ridge more than 24 hours after he was reported missing.

At 8:33 p.m. Saturday, May 8, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office received reports of an overdue, missing hiker. Dean had reportedly sent a text message to his wife stating he was lost somewhere on the Rock of the Ages Trail.

The Search and Rescue team was activated to locate Dean.

Around 11 p.m. Saturday, 16 search and rescue volunteers began a hasty search of the Horsetail Falls area. Overnight additional resources were requested. Sunday, approximately 40 people began to assist in the search — included drones and an airplane from the Hood River County Sheriff's Office.
