The death is the 32nd traffic fatality in Portland this year compared to 18 at this time in 2020.

The names of the victims were not immediately released. The Portland Police Bureau said the death was the 32nd traffic fatality in the city this year. That compares to 18 at this time in 2020.

Police said that at about 9:25 p.m. on July 5, East Precinct officers were dispatched to a collision near Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast 143rd Avenue.

The investigation revealed a car traveling east on Powell crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a car traveling west. The drivers of both cars were transported by ambulance to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the westbound car was also transported by ambulance, but did not survive.

The Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
