Oregon hate crime reports increase 59%
Law enforcement agencies in Oregon documented a 59% increase in reports of hate crimes last year.
In Oregon, hate crimes rose from 170 incidents in 2019 to 271 incidents in 2020, according to data the FBI collected from law enforcement agencies across the state. The number of victims climbed to roughly 360 last year, up from approximately 242 in 2019. Because of how the FBI collects the data, a small number of victims can be counted more than once if the perpetrator committed the crime because they perceived the victim to be part of multiple protected classes.
Nationally, reports of hate crimes rose to their highest level in more than a decade.
"They reflect likely both an increase in reporting as well as an increase in incidents," said Kiran Ramsey, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Portland field office.
