Armed drug suspect arrested after crashing car
Portland police arrested an armed drug suspect who caused an injury crash late Friday, Sept. 24.
Ronald T. Stephens Jr, 40, of Portland, was charged with attempting to elude by vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm (city code) and failure to perform the duties of a driver (property damage). He was also held on an arrest warrant.
Names and medical conditions of the crash victims have not been released.
According to Portland police, at 11:26 p.m. on Sept. 24, a North Precinct officer learned that a person in a vehicle was in possession of a gun in a hotel parking lot in the 3800 block of Northeast 82nd Avenue. The officer followed the suspect's car as he drove out of the parking lot and southbound on Northeast 82nd Avenue.
Police said when the officer initiated a traffic stop, the suspect failed to stop and sped away. The officer did not pursue, pulling over and turning off her overhead police lights. The suspect continued recklessly driving, however, until the vehicle he was driving crashed into another vehicle at Northeast Pacific Street.
Officers provided aid to people hurt in the crash. They were treated at a local hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Police arrested the suspect after a short chase on foot when the suspect ran from the area. They found suspected narcotics in his possession, and in the crashed vehicle they found a loaded revolver.
