Multnomah Sheriff: 81% vaccinated, no risk of lay-offs
More than 80% of Multnomah County Sheriff's Office employees have received their COVID-19 jabs despite a recent vaccination deadline from Gov. Kate Brown not affecting law enforcement or corrections employees.
The MCSO, which oversees law enforcement services for Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village and unincorporated portions of the county, reported that 602 out of 747 active employees are either fully or partially vaccinated. The sheriff's office added that 19 employees are on leave and do not have to submit vaccination status until they return to work.
Only a portion of sheriff's office employees were subject to the Monday, Oct. 18, deadline set by the governor to get vaccinated. Law enforcement officers and most corrections officers were exempt from that date, with the only exception being those corrections deputies working directly in health care settings.
The MCSO said no employees are at risk of termination with the deadline.
Staff working for Troutdale, Fairview and Wood Village did not fall under the vaccination mandate. Those cities also do not trigger the 100 employee benchmark that necessitates vaccinations. And while none of those cities is requiring employees to formally disclose their status, all have stressed a focus on backing mask mandates and promoting social distancing while on city properties.
Troutdale has 58 employees and City Manager Ray Young estimated 80% have received the jab. Wood Village has 15 employees and City Manager Greg Dirks estimated "most if not all" have gotten vaccinated. Fairview, which employees 27, had no vaccination records and could not hazard a guess.
The city of Gresham did not have data to share in time for publication on the vaccination status of city hall or police department employees, but will be making further determinations on vaccination mandates after receiving guidance from the state.
Gresham Fire & Emergency Services covers most of East Multnomah County. Of the 101 employees within the department that meet the categorization of emergency medical providers, thus triggering the healthcare worker vaccine mandate, the "majority have complied with the state mandate," a city spokesperson said.
Gresham Fire employees who have not provided proof of having received the required vaccine doses and who do not have a city-approved medical or religious exception could face discipline up to and including discharge.
