Elderly woman killed in North Portland house fire
An elderly woman was killed in a house fire in North Portland on Friday, Dec. 24.
The name of the victim was not immediately released.
According to Portland Fire & Rescue, crews responded to a report of a residential fire at 6405 N. Greeley Ave. just before 11:30 p.m. Dec. 24. When they arrived, firefighters found smoke coming from a single-story residence.
The first engine company forced the front door open to fight the fire and search for victims. When crews entered the structure, the blaze began showing from a window at the back of the residence.
Advancing the hose lines to the fire was challenging due to the amount of clutter inside the home. The fire burned a hole in the floor of the kitchen, adding to the dangers of battling the blaze. When the attack team reached the fire, they were able to extinguish it quickly.
According to PF&R, when crews were doing their initial search of the structure, they found the victim dead in one of the back rooms.
The fire is still under investigation. It was accidental, but a specific cause was not immediately determined.
