UPDATE: Police say wrong-way driver caused early Monday crash that snarled rush hour traffic.

Traffic was severely congested through the morning rush hour. Officials urged motorists to avoid the area while the crash was being cleaned up.

The crash happened after Portland police received calls of a wrong-way driver in the area around 2:53 a.m.. When officials arrived they found two people pinned in a Toyota Avalon.

The wrong-way driver reportedly hit a semi-truck head-on near SW Terwilliger Boulevard. Both individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital. According to officials, neither person is believed to have life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver did not report any injuries.
