Portland Public Schools board approves staff planning day, giving students a four-day weekend.

Portland Public Schools students will have a day off from school Monday, Jan. 31. The school calendar change was approved by unanimously by the PPS Board of Education during a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Friday, Jan. 28, is already a staff development day with no school. The schedule change means students will also get Monday, Jan. 31, off and return to school Tuesday, Feb. 1.

PPS officials said the change will give staff an extra day to evaluate how the first half of the year has gone and make necessary adjustments.

"It is critical that we offer this up," Sharon Reese, human resources director for PPS, told board members Tuesday, Jan. 18. "We asked our teachers and administrators, and even when we asked our students, 'what is it that you need?,' what we kept hearing over and over again is 'our staff needs time to collaborate.'"

Cheryl Proctor, the district's new deputy superintendent of instruction and school communities, said Jan. 31 will be an "administrator-led work day to really focus on school climate."
