Police said that eight people have been killed in Portland crashes so far this year compared to five by now in 2021.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, it was the second fatal crash in 48 hours in which suspects left the scene. Altogether, police said there have been eight fatal crashes in Portland so far this year compared to five at this time 2021.

Police said that officers found a person dead in the roadway after responding to a report of a crash at Southeast 160th Avenue and Powell Boulevard about 7 p.m.

"Witnesses said the person was struck by a vehicle, then the driver left the scene," police said.

Officers were not immediately able to locate the suspect or the suspect's vehicle, according to police.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The incident was the eighth fatal crash in Portland of 2022, police noted.

A driver reportedly involved in a fatal crash Thursday night, Jan. 20, was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including second-degree manslaughter, after police conducted a search of the area.
