Keffer White, 29, allegedly fatally injured Donald A. Pierce, 82, last month.

Murder has been added to the list of charges against a man accused of attacking two people at a bus stop in downtown Portland last month, following the death of one of the alleged victims.

Charges against Keffer White, 29, now include second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced Thursday, July 14.

White allegedly knocked Donald A. Pierce, 82, and Edward Lichtenstein, 88, to the ground and beat them while they were waiting for a bus at Southwest Fifth Avenue and Hall Street on June 25.

Witnesses reported that White said he was going to kill the victims during the attack, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Pierce died in the hospital July 7, officials from the Portland Police Bureau said.

Lichtenstein was treated and later released from the hospital, police said.

White was previously charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty to those charges on July 6, court records show. The first-degree assault charge and one attempted murder charge were removed following the new indictment.

White has been convicted of several felony and misdemeanor crimes dating back to 2011, including felon in possession of a firearm, strangulation and fourth-degree assault, court records show.

His next court appearance is currently set for Friday, July 15.
