The cuts to Nike's corporate workforce at its Beaverton-area world headquarters will be permanent.

Nike filed notice with the city, state and county this month that it will eliminate at least 500 jobs at its world headquarters.Nike Inc. will lay off at least 500 workers, according to a notice filed with local and state officials.

The sportswear giant said it will be "permanently reducing" its workforce at its world headquarters just outside Beaverton. The first round of layoffs are expected to come on Oct. 1, with more to follow, Nike Vice President Kim Lupo stated in the notice.

The notice, submitted under the WARN Act — which requires the government to be notified of major layoffs — is dated Thursday, July 23. It was posted online by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission, which maintains a database of WARN notices, a week later on Thursday, July 30.

Nike also confirmed that it will be permanently closing two Beaverton-area childcare centers operated by Nike. Those closures will affect 192 employees, according to the notice.

Other employees to be laid off include members of Nike's corporate leadership team and some executive assistants.

None of the workers being laid off are members of a labor union, the notice added.

News of the layoffs follows reports earlier this month that Nike planned to "streamline" operations at its world headquarters.

The planned layoffs are the largest by a single employer in Oregon in nearly two months, according to the state's WARN database.

The notice was submitted to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission as well as Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington and Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle.
