Sometimes a police officer's job is saving people in crisis - from themselves

On Saturday, April 7, at 11:49 p.m., East Precinct officers closed down Interstate 205 near Stark Street after learning that a man was running in front of vehicles.

Officers shortly afterward found the man. Interstate 205 was closed for approximately 30 minutes as East Precinct officers worked to get the man to safety, in collaboration with Portland Fire and Rescue and American Medical Response (AMR). The man, considered to be in a crisis, was taken to an area hospital for mental health treatment, and the freeeway was reopened by about 12:30 a.m.

The Portland Police Bureau reminds that help is available for community members struggling from a mental health crisis and/or suicidal thoughts. "Suicide is preventable," they point out.
