Ex-con with gun arrested on hate crime charges in Lents
On Sunday, July 22, at 12:14 p.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to the 9300 block of S.E. Steele Street in the Lents neighborhood, after a report of a man threatening a community member while brandishing a firearm.
Responding officers learned the suspect had threatened the victim at a camp located near the Springwater Corridor Trail between Steele and Mitchell Streets. Information about the suspect's description and last known location was broadcast to other officers in the area.
Several more squad cars arrived and officers established a perimeter and devised a plan to contact the reportedly-armed suspect. They found a man matching the suspect's description near the camp, and he was taken into custody without incident.
During the investigation, officers located and seized the gun believed to have been used to threaten the victim.
Based on information learned during the investigation, officers believe the suspect made biased statements directed at the victim while menacing the victim with the gun.
There were no reports of any injuries in relation to the incident.
A member of the Portland Police Bureau Tactical Operation Division's Gun Taskforce responded to the scene to assist in processing and collection of the firearm. A member of the Portland Police Bureau Detective Division's Bias Crime Detail was consulted in regards to the investigation.
The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Kipong Somsanuk. Somsanuk was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Menacing and Intimidation in the Second Degree.
