Sellwood seniors enjoy Mothers Day 'Car Parade'
Organizers of the parade were unsure how many families of their residents at "Elmcroft of Sellwood Senior Living" would actually drive by, on the morning of May 10, in a safe celebration of Mothers Day.
As it turned out, as the Mothers Day Car Parade began, there had been no reason to worry. Decorated vehicles were lined up on S.E. Sherrett Street all the way west to Sellwood Middle School, waiting their opportunity to turn right on S.E. 17th Avenue, and then drive through the retirement facility's parking lot.
"We had seen another community doing something similar, and we thought it would be a good idea to let our residents and their families at least see each other, during this time of quarantine – and show how much they are loved," explained the parade's organizer, Stephanie Simmons.
Since it was a sunny morning, Elmcroft residents were outside, lining the parking lot, and also up on the second floor's terrace.
"We got all the ladies dressed up, and our kitchen served them a special Mothers Day brunch," Simmons told THE BEE. "We just wanted, in this hard time when our residents are pretty much confined to their rooms and to the building, to have this parade to brighten their day."
