Not much has been made public by police about a murder near Cleveland High School yet

DAVID F. ASHTON - Officers cordoned off S.E. 33rd Avenue on November 7, on the east side of the CHS Athletic Field, to investigate a fatal shooting - which had apparently taken place in or near tents pitched beside the street. Gunshots rang out, killing a man, on Saturday evening November 7, along S.E. 33rd Avenue – just east of the Cleveland High School athletic field, and a few yards north of Powell Boulevard.

Central Precinct officers were dispatched there at 7:33 p.m.; they found a man who had been shot. Quickly, eleven additional police cruisers arrived, including those of Homicide Division Detectives.

"Officers rendered first aid until paramedics arrived but the victim died at the scene," reported Portland Police spokesperson.

A Portland Fire & Rescue Medic Unit stood by, but left the area just after 8 p.m. when the Multnomah County Medical Examiner arrived.

The focus of the investigation appeared to be centered on one of several tents pitched along the west side of 33rd Avenue.

FAMILY-PROVIDED IMAGE - Police say this man, 31-year-old Harold Andrew Major, was the murder victim in the shooting near Cleveland High - but little else has been disclosed about the case so far. Later, Homicide Division detectives identified the slain man as 31-year-old Harold Andrew Major. The Oregon State Medical Examiner has determined the cause of Major's death to be from a gunshot wound, and the manner of Major's death a homicide.

"The Portland Police Bureau will not be releasing additional information about this case at this time," the spokesperson said. The incident is the latest in a rising number of shooting incidents throughout Southeast Portland, as reported recently in THE BEE.
