The historic snow and ice storm of Valentine's Weekend damaged much -- including this store

DAVID F. ASHTON - An overhead work light, once illuminating the service bay and mounted high on the ceiling, now shines sideways through the front doors after the weight of accumulated ice collapsed the roof in a section of the S.E. Powell Boulevard Les Schwab store. A cleaning crew, working after hours in the Les Schwab Tire Center at 4105 S.E. Powell Boulevard, heard an ominous rumble overhead – and headed for the exits on February 15, late in the 10 p.m. hour.

That was a good – perhaps life-saving – decision. Moments later, the roof above the front service bays collapsed under the weight of accumulated sleet-forming ice and snow.

COURTESY KPTV FOX-12 NEWS - KPTV deployed a drone to show, from overhead, this total roof collapse at the Powell Boulevard Les Schwab store. Portland Fire & Rescue crews, dispatched at 10:57 p.m., arrived soon after. "All occupants are out safely and without injury; firefighters have detected natural gas in the building," a Fire Bureau official announced at the time. Northwest Natural Gas workers responded and safely shut off gas coming from lines broken in the roof collapse.

The following day, a manager at the store told THE BEE the business's sales area, waiting room, and storage area of the building are still intact. "We can keep helping customers with tires in our other bays, in the building along the back of the property –as soon as we get the power back on!"

DAVID F. ASHTON - The accumulated weight of ice, sleet, snow, and rain on the roof of the S.E. Powell Boulevard Les Schwab stores front service bays caused the entire roof to collapse, bending in the top of the walls. This area will be removed and rebuilt from scratch - but the rear part of the store was undamaged, and is still open for business. They'll not try to repair the front service bays, the manager remarked; the company intends to rebuild that section of the store from the ground up.
